HESI RN CAT Exam

WHAT IS A COMPUTER ADAPTIVE TEST? Adaptive tests adjust to the individual taking the test based on their ability and performance on each test item. The test is tailored on the individual responses of each test taker. If a test taker answers an item incorrectly, then the computer will present an easier item to answer next. If a test taker answers an item correctly, then a more difficult item will be presented next. This process continues until enough test items have been answered for the computer to establish the test taker’s ability. Since the computer selects the items for each exam based on the test taker’s performance, each test taker receives a different number of items and has a different length of testing.

THE NCLEX® & CAT The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) uses computer adaptive testing (CAT) to administer the NCLEX®. The variable length for the NCLEX-RN CAT is anywhere from 75 to 265 items. The computer decides whether students have passed or failed the exam using the following rules: 95% Confidence Interval Rule: Most common rule. The computer stops generating items when it is 95% certain that the candidates’ ability is clearly above or clearly below the passing standard. Maximum-Length Exam Rule: When close to the passing standard, the computer continues to generate items until the maximum number of items is reached. At this point, the computer decides whether the candidate passes or fails by the candidate’s final ability estimate.

PURPOSE OF THE HESI CAT EXAM Designed to provide student’s with a realistic depiction of what test day will be like. Simulates the NCLEX® testing experience to assess student’s preparedness to sit for the licensure exam. Value is in the real-world testing experience to help improve student confidence. Test anxiety can greatly affect test performance. The CAT Exam should not & does not replace the need for the HESI Exit Exam.
