“Our Democratic Republic will not sustain unless students are aware of their changing cultural and physical environments; know the past; read, write, and think deeply; and act in ways that promote the common good.” The College, Career and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards: Guidance for Enhancing the Rigor of K-12 Civics, Economics, Geography and History p. 5

UPDATE Social Studies Teaching and Learning in Kentucky Goal: Support the implementation of highly effective teaching and learning practices in the Social Studies through a focus on Literacy in History/Social Studies and analysis of the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework.

Question:  What is the C3 Framework?

Please Note… FRAMEWORK ≠ STANDARDS

NEXT STEPS: Leadership Networks InstructionCurriculum Assessments Teacher Development Current State Standards (KCAS SS and Literacy in History/SS +

Where can we access the C3 Framework?

 The result of a three year state-led collaborative effort, the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards was developed to serve two audiences:  1. States to upgrade their state social studies standards  2. Practitioners — local school districts, schools, teachers and curriculum writers — to strengthen their social studies programs

Collaboration is Key

Question:  What is the purpose of the C3 Framework for Social Studies?

Its objectives are to: *Enhance the rigor of the social studies disciplines *Build critical thinking, problem solving, and participatory skills to become engaged citizens * Align academic programs to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies

Question:  What instructional shifts must occur in Social Studies education?

Dimensions of the Framework

C3 Framework “FRAMES” Content Standards Questions and Inquiries Disciplinary Tools Concepts Evaluating Sources Using Evidence Communicating & Taking Action CONTENT STANDARDS (ideas to be taught and the grade levels at which to teach them)

 Questions for Exploration  Knowledge: what learners need to understand  Processes: what learners will be capable of doing  Products: how learners demonstrate understanding Learning Expectations in National Curriculum Standards

Question:  What is the vision for Social Studies Leadership Networks?

Focus on the Vision In the C3 Framework, the call for students to become more prepared for the challenges of college and career is united with a third element: preparation for civic life. The College, Career and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards: Guidance for Enhancing the Rigor of K-12 Civics, Economics, Geography and History p. 82
