LBOC11-Oct-2011CERNMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 1 LHC Physics Programme  what's left ?

LBOC11-Oct-2011CERNMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 2Overview  Until date Wed 19 Oct, FOCUS SHOULD BE HIGH LUMINOSITY PRODUCTION. –Only those requests that can be accommodated without (or with negligible) physics beam time cost will be attempted.  From Wed 19 Oct, priority shifted to the minimal program of the 90m optics –the mode of operation will change: we will take the time that is needed to achieve this goal. –depending on the progress and availability of experts, the 90m special runs will be alternated with high luminosity production and other special physics requests (e.g. VdM scans in IP2, IP8).

LBOC11-Oct-2011CERNMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 3 Requests that require no (negligible) dedicated beam time  LHCb polarity reversal (1 or 2 more times ?) –Beam time cost: ~0.8h per reversal (at injection)  ALICE solenoid at 40% (parasitic during high lumi physics) –Beam time cost: test ~0.5h at an "end of fill" (parasitic) use ~10h during a physics fill (parasitic)  Operate 1380b with satellite-main collisions in ALICE –(using the "natural" satellites at 25ns, i.e. with ~0.1% intensity of the main bunches) –Beam time cost: <0.5h

LBOC11-Oct-2011CERNMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 4 First priority (must achieve at all cost this year!)  90m, align all 220m TOTEM pots followed by data-taking –at least ~4h data-taking –Beam time cost: ~12h  90m, align ATLAS pots followed by data-taking –~2h ALFA standalone data-taking and at least ~2h with ATLAS DAQ –Beam time cost: ~12h (can of course be merged with previous) (Use these opportunities to make loss maps for 10m TCTs)

LBOC11-Oct-2011CERNMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 5 Second priority (we want to do it, but can accept failure)  VdM scans in IP2 and IP8 at 10m, ALICE+LHCb –Beam time cost: ~8h –(+4h if dedicated fill for IP8 TCT loss maps)  90m, repeat ~4h data-taking TOTEM+ATLAS as of previous slide –Beam time cost: ~8h  90m, repeat ~2h with ATLAS DAQ + ~2h ALFA OD calib runs –Beam time cost: ~4h if after other 90m fills (see above) ~8h if dedicated fill  90m optics measurements (AC dipole, local bumps) TOTEM+ATLAS –Beam time cost: ~6-8h (?)  25ns 3h stable beams, ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb –Beam time cost: ~6h  High pile-up => MD ATLAS, CMS –Beam time cost: ~9h TODAY ? done

LBOC11-Oct-2011CERNMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 6 Nice if could do a well  Test in LHC the PS-enhanced 25ns satellites (ALICE sat-main) –Beam time cost: ~1-2h (?) at injection  Put ALICE solenoid+dipole at zero in 50ns high lumi fill –risk due to long-range encounters ? –Beam time cost: ~8h (?)

LBOC11-Oct-2011CERNMassimiliano Ferro-Luzzi 7 Schedule (rough, to be discussed)  Called Wendy Korda (DG's VIP service): "no head of state visit in October"  Dates are tentative/approximative, to be confirmed 25 ns 90 m Pileup 90m VdM ? 90m VdM 3h stable beams pp IR2 aperture,  * = 1.5m, 1m moved to week 43.
