Born between the years of 1980 and 2000 The Millennial Generation makes up over 20 percent of the population in United States Millennial Generation Also known as: – Generation Y – Echo Boomers – Generation Next – Dot-Com Generation Children of the Baby Boomers Increased use of: – Communication – Media – Technology

Expect/Demand what they want Strong willed Passionate Optimistic Technology savvy Learning orientated Adaptable Ability to multi task Racially & Ethically Diverse Dependent on others

The Millennial Generation being born between the years of 1980 and 2000, are now the ages of years old. These are students going to college in a few years, in college now or recently graduated. The recently graduated college students are also the most recent entering the workforce.

It is today’s norm for the next generation to attend college. It is just expected of them to attend a college or university. Secondary education is such a norm now, that students will pay for an education without really knowing what they want to do

“Going to college is no longer reserved for the elite, it is the norm. Today, 64% of women and 60% of men go to college after graduating high school and 85% attend full- time.” (*Source: The Millennia's: Americans Born 1977 to 1994; Bureau of the Census: Educational Attainment, 2002)

“Most parents want their children to graduate from college. 58% want their children to graduate from college and 28% want them to obtain an advanced degree. Only 14% of parents do not want their children to receive a college education.” (*Source: The Millennia's: americans Born 1977 to 1994; Bureau of Census: A Child’s Day, 2000)

A college degree is what businesses are looking for in applicants. Without a degree it is hard to get a job anywhere, unless its labor intensive.

The job market has become very competitive. So competitive that the minimum requirements have increased. A college degree is now minimum, and a high school diploma is almost nothing in today’s job market. In the past good paying career type jobs could be found by just about anyone that graduated high school Today a high school diploma is only the first step. Just about everyone goes for a college degree if not further in their education.

The movie Post Grad is about a recent graduate of a university going for her dream job which she does not get, because there were lots of other girls going for the same position. She is unable to obtain a job and eventually ends up moving home and working for a fast food place. This shows how today’s job markets are and how much competition is actually out there.

“More affluent families have more children that are attending college. The majority of families with children ages 18 to 24 and incomes of $50,000 or more have at least one child in college.” (*Source: The Millennia's: Americans Born 1977 to 1994; Bureau of Census: School Enrollment-Social and Economic Characteristics of Students, 2002) College has become a necessity for any career seeking millennial. My parents never gave me a choice of going to college or not. Since I was a child I was taught that college is the next step after high school. (A non-optional step.)

On average each person that attends college spends over 17,000 dollars each year on tuition

Around 40 percent of students drop out of college before getting a degree Many college students can’t handle the pressure of college. Whether it’s the difficulty of classes or not being able to afford it. Yet going to college is still the norm.

Although the process of getting an education is very difficult with the increased amount of work and raising tuitions costs. If you can succeed it is worth it. You will earn more and will be much less likely to be unemployed. It will only get more competitive for jobs in the future and the millennial generation has a jump on it.
