Career Awareness Project Have you thought about what you might want to do after you graduate from high school? If not, this extra credit project is for you! Read through the slides to see if any of these professions might interest you. Do you have the interests any of these professions possess? Research the one that might look like you, add any characteristics I may have missed or add a profession you might like to explore. See me and we’ll get started to find what you might like to be when you graduate from high school.

First Marking Period Assignment CEW Standard Relate careers to individual interests, abilities & aptitudes. Slides one through eight will provide you with the information you need to complete the Career awareness assignment for the first marking period. Complete requirements found on the rubric on slide 8 to receive credit for the assignment

1 st Marking Period Rubric To score points for this assignment all you need to do is participate in each marking periods activities. Marking Period One: Research a field related to the health and wellness field. Add characteristic to the slides you think may be helpful with that profession or add a new profession with its characteristics listed. Earn bonus points for the marking period (2 percentage points) or make up a missed class (with 3 class points for the missed class) for each marking periods participation. Look each week to see how you can become one step closer to knowing what you might be doing the rest of your life! 2 nd Marking Period Assignment CEW Standard Justify the selection of a career. Read the 2 career clusters from the Health Sciences and Science, Technology and Mathematics at: Choose 10 careers that might interest you in the future. Choose one specific career and answer the following questions using the following websites: You may also choose one of your own from the research you will be doing.

Research Questions to answer 1. What would you be doing if you choose this career? Description of the job and the tasks you would be performing. 2. Requirements you might need in high school as far as courses that might be helpful to you once you reach college. What interests, skills and knowledge should you possess to succeed in this career.

3. What are the degree requirements? Will you need an associates, bachelor, masters or doctoral degree to complete this job successfully, and what are the advantages of these degrees associated with your field of study? 4. Does this career require an internship during your college education and or during your senior year or summer time? Where is the best place to complete the internship if it is required? Is there a licensing test associated with this degree

5.What colleges and or trade schools offer training in your chosen career? Where are they located and are they within your financial means? 6. List all websites used for this assignment at the end of your research.

3 rd Marking Period Assignment CEW Standard Apply research skills in searching for a job. Research using the following web sites (or ones you may have found on your own) what the job market will be in your chosen career

One of the most joyful experiences of life center around your graduation from college. Then you realize…..can I make it on my own? This portion of the assignment will help you focus on: 1. Will this career allow me to live as I see myself living, once I graduate from college? 2. Where will I be living….in a rural setting or an urban environment? 3. Will I have enough money to pay my bills and college loans. Good Food for thought when deciding “what do I want to be when I grow up.”

Please include the following information in your research as well as any web sites you may use. 1. Where will the best place to get in job in your chosen field. Will you need to go to a large city or will you be able to chose a more rural setting.

2. Will the salary you researched support you in the area in which you will need to work? Remember to include information about living expenses, rent, insurance, food costs, transportation, insurance, etc. Is the cost associated with the degree relational to salary expectations? Can a year end bonus or stock dividends be associated with a job in this field? 3. Interview a person who currently holds this position. Create questions prior to the on-site or telephone interview. Questions should be approved by me prior to interview. Use good interview and speaking skills, conduct yourself professionally as if you were interviewing for a position with this firm. Document your results and write a brief summary of the outcome of the interview.

4. Self-Reflection……..After conducting your interview, write a brief reflection stating “if” you can see yourself as part of this professional career. Be sure to include “why” you feel like you could be a part and “how” you can see yourself competing in this field or career choice. Be sure to include where you think you might like to work, salary, as well as long term goals as far as furthering your educational degree.

4 th Marking Period Final Project Create a poster compiling all the information you have learned from your research on one of the following Career Clusters: Health Science or Science, Technology and Mathematics. You must include information on all of the following items : 1. Name of the career, 2. Photo of a person working in the job setting 3. Salary Range 4. Educational Requirements and other Qualifications 5. Description of a day’s activities if you would be working in this job 6. Skills needed to complete this job 7. Interests to be successful in this career 8. Job outlook for the future in this occupation 9. Related Occupations

Posters will be constructed on a standard piece of poster board and be displayed throughout the boys and girls locker rooms each year. They must be colorful, appealing to the eye, neat, easy to read and well organized. As part of the 7 th and 8 th grade assignment, students will be viewing information presented on the posters and answering a set of questions in their initial search in their career awareness. These posters will be laminated and displayed each year for career awareness in the school. web site: (You are encouraged to find new and informative web sites. Be sure to record them for use on your final project) See the following instruction sheet for specific directions. Posters will be graded using a rubric with points for each of the specific categories. This is a culminating activity in your career search for the right path in your future.

Information Sheet for Career Poster Requirements for Career Poster: 1. Constructed on a standard piece of poster board. Name should be placed on the top right corner of the poster. 2. The poster should draw the viewer to it, offering them valuable information on the career. Make it colorful, easy to read, as well as neat and organized so the viewer may obtain information easily. 3. Include all information from previous slide when constructing the poster.

7 th and 8 th grade Career Exploration As part of your career exploration, I am asking each student to view the career posters in the locker room and choose 3 careers you might be interested in after graduation. This is an individual project, you must see me to sign up for your 3 choices. Answer the following questions concerning your career choices and place them in the envelop outside my office door. For those students who are in the current PE rotation, you will be completing this assignment during a class. For those who currently are not in the PE rotation this assignment will be considered extra credit and added to one of your previous grades.
