Writing a Summary Focus on sentence fluency

Sandwich Approach A topic sentence- gives the main idea of the paragraph. Detail sentences- give more information about the main idea. Supporting Details- provide even deeper insight into the “details.” Conclusion-A sentence that “wraps up” the paragraph

Connect Ideas All details must fit under the topic or main idea of the paragraph. Details should be presented in a logical order using first, next, then, finally, etc. Use key words to link one sentence to another.

The Periodic Table of the Elements is what scientists use to organize the elements. Begin with the topic or main idea :

The Periodic Table of the Elements is what scientists use to organize the elements. Dmitri Mendeleev and Henry Moseley are scientists who contributed to its organization. Add a detail :

The Periodic Table of the Elements is what scientists use to organize the elements. Dmitri Mendeleev and Henry Moseley are scientists who contributed to its organization. It is arranged by atomic number going from left to right. Add another detail :

It is organized by atomic number going from left to right. Each row, called a period, arranges elements with similar properties with the most reactive ones on the left. Elements in each column, called a group or family, also have similar properties & have a family name. Now Supporting Details :

This arrangement of the Periodic Table of Elements helps scientists to understand how elements interact with each other. Wrap It Up :
