Concept 1: What Is Energy FORMS OF ENERGY All forms of energy fall under two categories NGSS: Construct, use, and present arguments to support the claim that when the kinetic energy of an object changes, energy is transferred to or from the object. KINETIC: Kinetic energy is energy in motion POTENTIAL: Potential energy is stored energy  RADIANT ENERGY  THERMAL ENERGY  SOUND  MOTION  ELECTRICAL ENERGY  CHEMICAL ENERGY  NUCLEAR ENERGY  STORED MECHANICAL ENERGY  GRAVITATIONAL ENERGY

Concept 2: Energy Transformation & Flow NGSS Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for the role of photosynthesis in the cycling of matter and flow of energy into and out of organisms. Plan an investigation to determine the relationships among the energy transferred, type of matter, mass, and the change in the average kinetic energy of the particles as measured by the temperature of the sample.. The Law of the Conservation of Energy: “Energy cannot be created or destroyed it can only change form” (Einstein). The question is…. Healthy Choice 4-H Energy Bike Lab: Healthy Choice 4-H Energy Bike Reservation Instructions: T o reserve the Energy bike – us the on-line reservation site: There are five locations (host counties) in NYS C omplete the registration/request and make arrangements with one of the host counties to transport the bike lab to your location and back to the host county. To assemble the 4-H energy Bike: Identify the four (4) major components. 1.Energy bike 2.Bike trainer stand with the….. 3.……Generator assembly (number 2. and 3. stay connected as a single unit during transport) 4.Table-top display unit Pull the “tightening handle” on the trainer to the “open” position Place the bike on the stand so the axels will be evenly inserted to the trainer stand clamps Tighten the trainer clamps to the bike axel by rotating the tightening handle clock-wise. Be sure the rear bicycle wheel is touching the trainer “resistance drum” with moderate friction. To do this reach under the generator and pull up until the rear bike wheel rests snugly on the resistance drum. Then tighten the “J” bolt with the large nut. This can generally be done by hand (without a wrench). The rear wheel should line up so that it is centered over the resistance drum. There are adjustment options if this is necessary. The generator is attached to an assembly that may be lowered up or down by loosening two nuts/bolts 4-H Energy Bike Lab Contents: 4-H kid-size 20” bike One tool kit box including: (screwdriver set; metric and standard Allen wrenches; electrical tape; adjustable wrench; side cutter pliers. Bike Trainer Stand 12 volt generator and mounting brace Table top light bulb display 3 sample light bulbs (incandescent, Compact Florescent CFL; Led bulbs) One (1) 12 volt tailgate blender

Operating the 4-H energy Bike: Safety Factors: Be sure participants have parental permission (this may not always be possible depending on the kind of event, but is suggested if a parent is present) Be watchful of clothing that could easily get caught in the bike chain or spinning wheel Never let youth operate the bike barefoot Avoid letting children to young/too small operate the bike. It is easy to slip off the pedals and “crash” on the bike frame – Prevent Avoidable Injuries!! Leading a fun and Educational Experience: Be sure participants have parental permission (this may not always be possible depending on the kind of event, but is suggested if a parent is present) Be watchful of clothing that could easily get caught in the bike chain or spinning wheel Never let youth operate the bike barefoot Avoid letting children to young/too small operate the bike. Share the Healthy Choice Concepts and Energy- Smart ideas: Choose one youth participant to pedal the bike Remember – those not on the bike are an important part of your audience. Focus the discussion on them as well as the rider Engage the audience in two (2) energy discussions. 1.Source of Renewable Energy – use the guide from pages 2 and 3 (“Forms of Energy” and “Energy Transformation Flow”)to discuss where almost all energy originates. Depending on time you can also discuss the forms of energy and definition of “renewable” and “non-renewable” energy. 2.“Feel The Power” – let participants experience the “feel” of generating efficient and non-efficient light bulbs. They can also power the 12 volt blender by peddling. There is a round knob that allows you to select the various bulbs and blender. Each is labeled.
