EQ: What are the 4 layers of Earth?
The Layers of Earth
The Layers of the Earth
The Four Layers The Earth is composed of four layers: 1.Crust 2.Mantle 3.Outer Core 4.Inner Core
1. The Crust Acts like the skin of an apple Is the thinnest layer Under the ocean = oceanic crust Under the continents = continental crust
Plates The crust of the planet is broken into pieces called plates The plates “float” on the other three layers
2. The Mantle Largest layer Made of hot dense rock that flows Can be broken into 2 sections: -Upper mantle (lithosphere) -Lower/middle mantle (asthenosphere)
The Lithosphere rigid rock that sits under the crust
The Asthenosphere What the plates “float” on top of Like plastic
Causes the mantle to flow Hot materials rises, cools, and sinks- cycle repeats over and over Convection Currents
3. The Outer Core VERY HOT! Liquid that contains melted metals (iron and nickel)
4. The Inner Core Pressure and temperatures are very high Causes metals to be squeezed together = no movement SOLID
Note: Review Highlight the following terms: Crust, Mantle, Inner Core, Outer Core, Convection Current, Oceanic Crust, Continental Crust, Lithosphere, Asthenosphere In BLUE, draw a square around all information on CRUST In GREEN, draw a square around all information on MANTLE In RED, draw a square around all information on OUTER CORE In PURPLE, draw a square around all information on INNER CORE
