3. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee’s elder brother Prithi Chand was becoming more and more jealous as Guru Jee’s popularity was growing. He always felt he should have been made the Guru and decided he would make Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee’s life a living hell. 1. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee laid the foundation stone for Sri Harmandir Sahib Jee and decided to build it lower than the city, to remind his Sikhs that humility should be a Sikhs greatest virtue. He also decided to give Sri Hamandir Sahib to welcome everyone. 2. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee always cared for everyone especially people with leprosy as they were treated really badly. Guru Jee took special care by giving them medicines, dressing their wounds and even showering his blessings on them. Everyone loved Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee. 5. Prithi Chand tried to kill Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee’s son on 3 different occasions. He sent a nurse with poison, got a snake charmer to release a snake near Hargobind, and on another attempt sent a servant with poisonous milk. However, all 3 attempts failed as God protected him. 6. Prithi Chand’s son Meharban started to compose his own hymns and was passing them as the compositions of the Sikh Guru Sahibs. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee decided to create an authentic Scripture called ‘Sri Adi Granth Sahib’ to ensure Sikhs weren’t misled. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee’s Shaheedi Storyboard – Part 1 4. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee had no children as yet, so Prithi Chand who had become old hoped that his own son Mehrban would be able to succeed Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee as the next Guru of the Sikhs. However, on 14th June 1595, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee had a son called Hargobind.

8. Prithi Chand along with Chandu and the Hindu and Muslims priests all went to Jahangir and made up false rumours about Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee. They said that Guru Jee was going to over thow him as Emperor. They also said Guru Jee had written bad thing about Islam which was untrue. 6. A rich arrogant Hindu banker of Delhi called Chandu Shah tried to marry his daughter to Hargobind, the son of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee. But due to his blasphemous remarks about Sikhi, the Sikh Sangat refused to accept the marriage proposal. 7. By now Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee was becoming very popular and thousands of people were visiting Sri Harmandir Sahib Jee everyday. Everyday more and more people were becoming Sikhs. This was not seen as a good thing by the Hindu & Muslims priests. 5. Jahangir asked Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee to make changes in Sri Adi Granth Sahib but as this was the Word of God Guru Jee refused. Guru Jee was given another option to accept Islam but Guru Jee refused this too. Jahangir then ordered that Guru Jee be tortured till death. 6. Guru Jee was tortured for 5 long days which included having to sit on a hot iron plate. At no point did Guru Jee show any sign of pain. He just repeated “Sweet is Your will, O God; the gift of your Name alone I seek”. On the final day, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee became Shaheed and he left this world. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee’s Shaheedi Storyboard – Part 2 4. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee then received the summons to appear before Jahangir. Guru Jee was not afraid but he knew that it was not a good sign and he knew he would not be back. So Guru Jee declared that his son Hargobind should be installed as the next Guru.
