Chapter 15 - Discussing and Presenting a Case Study 1 Preparation Steps for the Oral Case Presentation What type of discussion strategy should you adopt?  Consider your knowledge about different parts of the particular discipline (finance, accounting, etc.)  Consider your confidence level for the particular discipline How visible do you desire to be?  Active  Moderately visible  Passive role

Chapter 15 - Discussing and Presenting a Case Study 2 Preparation Steps for the Oral Case Presentation What role do you want to play?  Expert witness – has insider knowledge of the case  Bail ‘em out – waits until class gets stuck and comes to its aid  Assume a personality – assumes role of person within the organization being discussed  Get the facts – throws out facts in a quick and unimportant manner

Chapter 15 - Discussing and Presenting a Case Study 3 Preparation Steps for the Oral Case Presentation What role do you want to play?  Industry expert – authority on the industry in question; can offer trends and clarification on case  I’ve got experience – person who has work experience in business and type of situation under discussion  Questioner – directs crucial questions toward participants  Wrap-it-up – leaves participants with a clearer understanding of the entire case and discussion

Chapter 15 - Discussing and Presenting a Case Study 4 Preparation Steps for the Oral Case Presentation Who is your competition?  Observe which classmates talk the most; determine if their comments are accurate What is the instructor’s style?  The cross-examiner – thoroughly questions each statement  Devil’s advocate – questions students on position taken  The hypothetical position – uncovers strength of a discussion’s logic  Role playing – students assume various personalities within the case  The silent style – allows class to lead discussion

Chapter 15 - Discussing and Presenting a Case Study 5 Preparation Steps for the Oral Case Presentation How will you handle the instructor’s questions?  Lead-off question is most important  Stimulates further discussion  Answers reflect who is prepared to discuss the case  Instructor realizes each class member has a different opinion How will you ask questions?  Minimize direct questions that do not relate specifically to the case discussion  Ask questions that are logical and self-explanatory

Chapter 15 - Discussing and Presenting a Case Study 6 Preparation Steps for the Oral Case Presentation How should you prepare your discussion notes?  Analyze case – use six-step analysis process  Rescript your notes – revise to better serve you during the discussion  Refer to analytical tools – refer to tools that provide the most information  Make keyword notes – for quick reference  Use instructor’s note pattern – can more easily follow class discussion and contribute your ideas

Chapter 15 - Discussing and Presenting a Case Study 10 Presentation of the Oral Case Analysis Class discussions  Look for a place to insert good qualitative statements  Give effective summaries  Summarize what has taken place  Relate case and discussion to overall context of theories being studied  Do not expect a correct answer to the case problem  Few instructors provide their solutions to the case  Prefer to use alternatives developed by class in relating course theory

Chapter 15 - Discussing and Presenting a Case Study 11 Presentation of the Oral Case Analysis Group presentation  Form your group on the basis of complementary skills  Each member analyzes case and arrives at a solution  Meet to arrive at group’s solution to the problem  Divide presentation by expertise or communicative skills  Decide how to use visual aids  Meet for a practice session  Arrive early and dress appropriately on day of presentation  Support each other in words and actions during presentation  Be prepared to answer any questions from the audience
