Music: a Comparison of the 20 th Century to the 21 st Century By Jade Santos Period 6

What was it? What was it like? Music Popular in the 20 th century: Jazz, Blues Chants, melodies, songs that had ethnic influences, ballet Ethnic influences: American Indian, African American, Anglo-Celtic Example: Indian Suite for orchestra by Edward MacDowell Popular in the 21 th century: R&B, Hip Hop, Rap Example: Billionaire ft. Bruno Mars by Travie McCoy

How prevalent was it? 20 th Century: Music was very widespread and certain genres were listened more to in certain regions. 21 st Century: All genres are listened to in all parts of the U.S.

Who was affected? 20 th Century: Those that were affected by the jazz and blues were mostly African American, but others were touched by the music as well. 21 st Century: Almost anyone that listens to music now is affected. The simple tempo of a song can make someone feel a certain emotion. Lyrics can make a person relate more to the story being told as well.

What did it cause? 20 th Century: Music caused people to feel certain emotions and allowed the song writers express themselves. It also began the widespread of jazz 21 st Century: Music still has the effect it did in the 20 th century, it’s just more popular. Everyone hears music and those that make music are more famous than they would’ve been in the 20 th Century.

How does it reflect the times? Basically, for both centuries, the singers and songwriters talked about the struggles or good things that occurred in the time period they lived in. For example, some blues songs written by African Americans might’ve spoken about racism in the 1900s. Another example would be a young artist like Justin Bieber singing about heartbreaks.

Interview Part Interviewee: Jerry Balleza (my grandfather) What was it? “It was an outlet for those who had no other way to express themselves or those that enjoyed creating music.” How prevalent was it? “Music, especially when it was well-liked, spread fairly quickly although not as fast as it does today.” What did it cause? “Many people related to songs and it made music even more popular, especially jazz and blues.” How does it reflect the times? “It reflected what some people were thinking and their stories of what they were going through.”
