HISTORY OF ATOM PROJECT: ERNEST RUTHERFORD By- Emily T. Sydney C. Yoseph K. HISTORY OF ATOM PROJECT: ERNEST RUTHERFORD

Ernest Rutherford

Discovery When and what was discovered? - 1895 Rutherford starts researching about radiation and concludes that there are two different types of radiation. He labeled them “Alpha” and “Beta” - 1903 Rutherford introduced his theory of disintegration theory of radioactivity and he said that radioactivity energy is emitted from within an atom.

Scientific Facts: Rutherford was was given his first science book at age 10 and it influenced his first science experiment. In 1895, Rutherford was the first research student at the University of Cambridge. Many of Rutherford’s discoveries also became the basis of the European Organization for nuclear research Rutherford was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1908 for his theory on atomic structure. Rutherford and Yale professor, Bertram Borden Boltwood went on to categorize radioactive elements into what the called “Decay Series” Rutherford was credited for discovering radioactive gas. Rutherford created the simple model of the atom in a well known symbol showing electrons showing electrons circling the nucleus- this model is used by various organizations.

Rutherford’s Atomic Model

Random Facts: JJ Thomson invited him to collaborate on a study of x-rays Born August 30th, 1871 and died October 19th, 1937 The element “Rutherfordium” was named after him. Famous Quote: “All science is either physics or stamp collecting.”
