Introduction to Insects. Outline Insects and their relatives How insects rule the world Insect anatomy and biology.
 Insects are like arthropods because they have a segmented body, an exoskeleton, and jointed appendages  They have a body divided into three parts:
MILLIPEDES.
Eat almost any organism, living or dead, including fungi, plants, and animals; some are specialists, ex: bees specialize on pollen and nectar have 3 body.

What is an insect? Insects have three body sections, six legs, one pair of antennae, and usually one or two pairs of wings. The three body sections are.

What makes a true insect? TRUE INSECTS What makes a true insect? Be sure to tell the story of the “hum” bug!

Check These Out! Pillbug Pillbugs and sowbugs are dark gray, 1/2 inch long, oval crustaceans that are humpbacked and appear to be covered with segmented armor. Pillbugs are different from sowbugs because pillbugs are able to roll themselves up into a ball when alarmed, and they lack the two prominent tail-like appendages.

Check These Out! Spiders Spiders have a hard body (exoskeleton) that has two main parts. Spiders have 8 legs.

Check These Out! Centipedes have many legs and their body has many sections.

Check These Out! Millipedes There are many species of millipedes, most of which are long, many-segmented, worm-like creatures. Every millipede has two pairs of legs attached to each apparent body segment. Most millipedes are brown or black, but some species are orange or red. They range in size from 5/8 to 4-inches in length.

They are all “bugs” But None of Them Were Insects So what makes a bug an insect? See the next slide to find out!

Insects Insects go through Metamorphosis Insects have an exoskeleton Insects have six legs Insects have three body segments: Head, Thorax, Abdomen Insects often have two pairs of wings Insects usually have one pair of antenna

ALL INSECTS GO THROUGH METAMORPHOSIS Metamorphosis means “big change”
