2

The use of the insects to aid legal investigations. It is commonly broken down into three general areas: –Medicolegal –Urban and –Stored product 3

Medicolegal focuses on the criminal component of the legal system and deals with feeding insects that typically infest human remains (commonly use to determine time of death). Urban aspect deals with the insects that affect man and his immediate environment (relates to interpretation on damage caused). Stored product insects are commonly found in foodstuffs (relates to food contamination). 4

5

What is maggot? It is one of the stages found in the life-cycle of fly. 6

Eggs 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd larvae Adult fly (23 hours) (130 hours) (143 hours) pupae 7

8

Corpse with maggots Maggots 9

10

To identify fly species for estimation of PMI (Post-mortem inverval) 11

12

Fixed sample Alive sample Transfer into containers with meat Allow to develop until L3 stage Allow to develop until pupa stage Transfer to develop into adult stage Sacrifice Mounted Slide preparation Determine species Examine for specific characteristics 13

Mounted adult fly 14

Slide of maggot 15

Anterior Spiracle Identification of the specific characteristics of the maggot 16

1. Measuring the length of larvae 17

2. Characterising the anterior spiracle 18

3. Characterising the posterior spiracle 19

Based on the characteristic of posterior spiracle, the maggot can be grouped as follows: 20

21

The number of fly species identified is 9 The most common species is Chrysomya megachepala (52%) followed by C.rufifacies (21%). The least common species are Chrysomya bezziana and Hermetria illucens 22
