Issues with International Staffing – In the past the belief was that there were not enough trained managers in foreign markets – Expatriates used instead of local managers – Shift in last 20 years toward more local management Best to use expatriates only during initial setup and training Train local managers to gradually assume management control

197 EXPATRIATES: An expatriate is a person temporarily or permanently residing in a country and culture other than that of the person's upbringing or legal residence

EXPATRIATES: Advantages: Expatriates often receive larger compensation packages Receive extra benefits for housing, taxes Disadvantages: Higher cost of moving and living abroad But they also have to deal with cultural shocks and repatriation culture shocks Higher pay may cause problems with local managers
