Hometown Citizens - Homeland Heroes DDR EXCELLENCE PROGRAM THE EXCELLENCE PROGRAM The program has a series of activities. These activities are not about all of the bad drugs, their side-effects and what they can do to human performance. The Excellence Program Activities are about the many facets of a drug and alcohol-free lifestyle that will help prepare young Americans for a career in the world of aviation. It is primarily aimed at the Cadets and their ambition to become a great pilot. The Excellence program is about having fun doing activities related to aviation physiology; role models; the flight environment; and how even harmless, over-the-counter substances can become a threat when flying an airplane. It tells young Americans that we do have better things to do than drugs.

Hometown Citizens - Homeland Heroes DDR EXCELLENCE PROGRAM One activity is titled, “I DON’T THINK I SHOULD FLY AND I’LL TELL YOU WHY.” It’s about a cadet taking a couple of Tylenol PM ® tablets the night before she is scheduled to fly at a glider encampment. The objective is to analyze the facts and determine whether or not she is really safe to fly a glider at high altitude.

Hometown Citizens - Homeland Heroes DDR EXCELLENCE PROGRAM This activity is called “Capture the Black Bullet.” It is all about reaction times and who can capture a black foam tube launched from a simple foam tray with a rubber band.

Hometown Citizens - Homeland Heroes DDR EXCELLENCE PROGRAM Another activity is called, “Energy Drinks, Are They Safe?” The Cadet is required to research their contents and their consequences.

Hometown Citizens - Homeland Heroes DDR EXCELLENCE PROGRAM There are two levels of activities. Level One is usually easier than Level Two. In each activity, the Cadet Candidate is given a series of Tasks. The Cadet Candidate is required to work with a senior squadron member called a Mentor. The Excellence Program requires the Cadet Candidate to do ten activities at each level. At the end of each activity, the Mentor must approve and sign the activity book before the Cadet Candidate can continue. The Cadet Candidate has 36 activities to choose from. Once a Cadet Candidate finishes a level, he or she is entitled to be recognized in a ceremony by the Squadron Commander.
