Ho Chi Minh became the communist leader of Vietnam Demanded freedom from France Battle of Dien Bien Phu- 55 day siege of the French city. France surrenders and leaves Vietnam

Vietnam was divided along the 17 th parallel Ho Chi Minh’s nationalist communist government in the North Ngo Dinh Diem, a French educated Catholic in the South

- Diem was not popular -Passed many anti-Buddhist laws -Appointed family members to important political offices

A date was set to have free elections to unite the country under one leader Diem backed out which led to war between North and South Vietnam Vietcong- communist rebels in South Vietnam

Domino Theory- If Vietnam fell to Communist, its closest neighbors would soon become communist too 1961 JFK sent military advisors Southeast Asia Treaty Organization- provided economic and military aide to South Vietnam

August 2 nd Gulf of Tonkin Incident -North Vietnamese torpedo boats fired on the USS Maddox -President Johnson ordered an immediate air strike on North Vietnam -Gulf of Tonkin Resolution- Allowed the President to take any means necessary to repel any attack against the US
