Presentation transcript:

I am sure that the most famous person you know that hides for a living is Waldo. Here is a picture of Waldo. Before we get started see if you can find Waldo in these pictures. This will test your predator skills of looking closely and finding something that is very well hidden!

Good job…. But that was kind of easy. Try this one!

That was harder, huh? Great predator skills!!

Some animals hide in plain sight in order to survive in the wild! You might be thinking, how does this work!? When you play hide-n-seek can you just sit in the middle of the room? No, you will be found immediately. The difference between humans and some animals who hide in the open is that these animals have colors and patterns that allow them to disappear, almost becoming invisible before your very eyes… just like Waldo!

Can you find the animal in these pictures?

This remarkable walking stick is native to Australia and New Guinea. Large females such as this can be up to six inches long (more than 15 cm)..

This remarkable walking stick relative is native to Indonesia and Malaysia. There are several color variations that perfectly match the foliage of trees and shrubs..

Leafy sea dragon (Phycodurus eques), one of the most remarkable examples of camouflage in the animal kingdom. Native to southern Australia, this fish is difficult to distinguish from leafy seaweeds. In fact, at first glance it is hard to tell that it is a fish.. A faint, transparent, dorsal fin is barely discernable in the photo.

Want to learn more? Great idea! Follow the web to these sites about camouflage! Camouflage Game: Choose an animal and a background. Then try different fur colors, fur shadings and patterns to see which ones work best in different habitats. Camouflage Field Book: Click on a habitat and search for the camouflaged animal. Seeing Through Camouflage: Match the animal to the types of camouflage. The Hide and Seek Sea: Find 22 animals hidden in the picture that are expert at hiding. Nature's Camouflage Artistis: Insects, or bugs, as most people call them, are not very big or strong. They REALLY need camouflage to stay alive! If you want to do some FUN activities click here.
