Quantitative Values in Chemistry (Math!!)
Scientific Notation Used for writing very small or very large numbers. Written as the coefficient multiplied by 10 raised to a power: 3.0 x 10 4 For numbers > 10 exponents are positive For numbers < 10 exponents are negative To multiply in SciNots, add exponents. To divide in SciNots, subtract exponents.
Sci Nots Practice! A gold atom has a mass of g. Write this number in Scientific Notation. The radius of earth is meters. Express in SciNot. Diameter of a human hair: m. Length of a football field: 91.4m
Sig Figs? Thems All non-zero numbers are significant. All zeros between non-zero numbers are significant. The Zeros to the right of the decimal and to the left of non-zero numbers are NOT significant. Zeros at the end of a number and to the right of a decimal point are significant. RULES! Zeros at the right of a number and to the left of the decimal are NOT significant.
Two are infinite! Counting: If it is counted, it is exact! Defined: Measurement conversions. i.e. 60 min = 1 hour.
Sig Figs in Measurements All divisions of the instrument that you can read Known ESTIMATE the next digit. Unknown
