The Election 1. President: James Madison Number 4__ VP – George Clinton 2. Political Party _Democratic Republican 3. Term of Office _ Who came before and after him, and what were their Political parties? Thomas Jefferson (Democratic Republican) was before him and James Monroe (also a Democratic Republican) followed. 5. Were there any unusual circumstances surrounding his ascent to the presidency? If so, describe the situation in specific detail. Madison was Jefferson’s Sec. of State and a Virginian. As president he was the second member of the Virginia Dynasty and began the idea that the Sec. of State was the gateway to the presidency. While the Embargo Act was unpopular the overall ideas of the Democratic Republicans were much more in favor than the Federalists. Electors: Madison 122, Pinckney 47, Clinton 6
