Christopher Columbus was born in Italy in 1451, He became a sailor when he was only fifteen years old. He had maps that showed that the world wasn’t flat, but many people did not believe him. He got turned down many times before he finally got the approval. Finally, approved by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabelle from Spain, however he had to wait until the war was over. When the was over in 1492, he got final approval from Queen Isabelle. When they landed Columbus thought they were in India, but they were actually in the Bahamas. He named it San Salvador The next time Columbus sailed, he took seventeen ships and fifteen hundred men. When they arrived back from the next voyage, Columbus was put in jail because many of the sailors said that he was cruel. The Queen bailed him out of jail. After he was freed, he went back to Hispaniola and died in 1506.

Christopher Columbus realized that the world was not flat and he wanted to prove it. Columbus asked many Kings and Queens to fund his voyage, finally, The King and Queen of Spain funded his voyage. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabelle gave Columbus 3 ships and about 100 men to set sail with him He actually didn’t go to the Indies but he went to islands at the bottom of North America.

Christopher Columbus and his crew set sail August 2, 1942 On October 12, 1942 only 71 days after they set sail, they saw land. They put a flag in the ground and named it San Salvador for Spain. Columbus thought that they had landed in the Indies so he called the Native Americans Indians. They actually landed at the end of Florida.

The Nina was the smallest of the three ships. The ship was between 50 and 60 tons. It had four sails where as most ships only have three. The four sails made the ship the best of the three to sail upwind.

Not much is known about the Pinta. It was about 70 tons.

The Santa Maria was fat and slow. This was the ship that Christopher Columbus was on. It was made for carrying cargo. The ship was rented.

“In fourteen hundred and ninety two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. He took three ships with him, too, And called aboard his faithful crew. Mighty, strong, and brave was he As he sailed across the open sea. Some people still thought the world was flat! Can you even imagine that?”
