Problem Solving Write-Up Math, Mrs. Tellez

1. Problem Statement Rewrite the problem in your own words so that someone reading your paper could understand exactly what you were asked to do. Be sure to include the question you want to answer.

2. Plan Tell what you will do to solve the problem. Which strategy or strategies will you use? Before you begin work, develop a reasonable answer to the problem.

3. Work Show all the work you did to solve the problem. Use a table, graph, picture, chart, and/or calculations. Explain in detail what you did so that the reader will understand your work and how you arrived at an answer.

4. Answer Write your answer to the problem in a sentence. Verify your answer using mathematics. Could there be any other answers? Compare your answer to the reasonable estimate you made in step 2. Write what you learned from this problem that could help you solve other problems.

Example Bean Bag Game Ben got 190 points with two tosses Kim got more points than Ben Show two different scores Kim could get.

Counting Marbles Find all the different ways you can divide equally 144 marbles into bags.

At the Zoo The keeper of the bird cages at the zoo discovered that two crested cockatoos would eat two pounds of bird seed every two weeks; that the three Peruvian parrots would eat three pounds of bird seed every three weeks; and that four Mozambique macaws would eat four pounds of bird seed every four weeks. How many pounds of bird seed will 12 crested cockatoos, 12 Peruvian parrots, and 12 Mozambique macaws eat in 12 weeks?

Spring Garden Planning Today I started to plan my garden. The length of the rectangle area that I am going to plant is three feet longer than it is wide. I decided to plant one-third of the garden area with Sunflowers. Another fourth of my garden will be planted with Brown-eyed Susans. Only one-fifth of my garden will contain Petunias. Exactly one square yard in the rectangular garden will be devoted to Foxglove. The last one-sixth of my garden will be filled with Lavender. I would like you to find the area, as well as the length and width, of my fractional garden. Please be sure to include the units of measure in your answer.

Birthday Cake 4/7 of the birthday cake was eaten on your birthday. The next day your dad ate ½ of what was left. You get to finish the rest of the cake. How much is left?

Ice Cream The recipe for mint chocolate chip ice cream requires 2 ¼ cups of cream for 5 people. You need ice cream for 8 people. How much cream will you need? 3.6 cups

Football A football team boasts that all the numbers on  their jerseys are prime numbers under 100.  What is the largest number of players the team could have?

Digging Holes It takes one man one day to dig a 2m x 2m x 2m hole. How long does it take 3 men working at the same rate to dig a 4m x 4m x 4m hole? Let x = rate of one man = 23 m3/ 1 day = 8m3/day         3x = rate of three men = 3(8m3/day) = 24m3/day      Volume to be shoveled = 64m3         Therefore, it would take three men                                64m3/(24m3/day) = 2 2/3 days

Grocery Store The grocery store parking lot will hold 1000 vehicles. 2/5 of the parking spaces are for cars. When you went to buy groceries, there were 200 cars and ? trucks in the parking lot. The parking lot was ¾ full. How many trucks were in it?
