CLASSROOM MANUAL l CHAPTER 4 –page 74

BEARINGS, BUSHINGS, THRUST WASHERS l When a component slides over or rotates around another part, the surfaces that contact each other are called bearing surfaces. l A part may have one or more bearing surfaces. l Bearings control radial position. l Bearings that take radial loads are called bushings.

THRUST WASHERS l THRUST WASHERS control axial loads. l All types of bearings run against a harder surface. l Bearings reduce friction and wear. l Nylon or Teflon are used when load is low. l Torrington needle bearings are used when load is higher.

GASKETS and SEALS l The gaskets and seals in an automatic transmission help to contain the fluid within the transmission and prevent the fluid from leaking out the various hydraulic circuits.

MATERIALS l Gaskets –Paper –Rubber –Cork –Composite l Seals –Rubber –Metal –Teflon Page 76

GASKETS l Hard gaskets (paper) are used between machined surfaces. l Soft gaskets are used with oil pans. l Some vehicles come with RTV from the factory, replace with a gasket.

SEALS l Use a installation tool. l Lube lip of seal. Lip seals and O’rings l Match new seal in bore. l Lip seals have numbers to match. l O’ring –Square cut –Round Page 78

METAL SEALING RINGS l Some leakage is acceptable. l Hook type l Butt type l Side clearance l Check EVERY new ring in the bore it will be used in. Page 79

TEFLON SEALS l Used in place of metal sealing rings. l Less wear and longer lasting. l Do not overlap ends incorrectly.
