NEHEMIAH – A LEADER’S PRIORITIES

NEHEMIAH – A LEADER’S PRIORITIES A call from God ‘Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire’ (1:3).

NEHEMIAH – A LEADER’S PRIORITIES A clear vision ‘If it pleases the king… let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it’ (2:5).

NEHEMIAH – A LEADER’S PRIORITIES Taking stock ‘By night I went out, examining the walls of Jerusalem, which had been broken down, and its gates, which had been destroyed by fire’ (2:13).

NEHEMIAH – A LEADER’S PRIORITIES Building a team ‘You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace’ (2:17).

NEHEMIAH – A LEADER’S PRIORITIES Careful organisation ‘The men of Tekoa repaired a section, from the great projecting tower to the wall of Ophel. Above the Horse Gate, the priests made repairs, each in front of his own house. Next to them, Zadok made repairs…’ (3:27-29).

NEHEMIAH – A LEADER’S PRIORITIES Giving encouragement ‘The strength of the labourers is giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot build the wall’ (4:10).

NEHEMIAH – A LEADER’S PRIORITIES Forestalling opposition ‘When our enemies heard that we were aware of their plot and that God had frustrated it, we all returned to the wall, each to our work’ (4:15).

NEHEMIAH – A LEADER’S PRIORITIES Resolving disputes ‘What you are doing is not right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach of our Gentile enemies?’ (5:9).

NEHEMIAH – A LEADER’S PRIORITIES Leading by example ‘I and my men are also lending the people money and grain. But let us stop charging interest!’ (5:10).

NEHEMIAH – A LEADER’S PRIORITIES Personal integrity ‘I sent this reply: Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head’ (6:8). ‘Should someone like me run away? I will not go!’ (6:11)

NEHEMIAH – A LEADER’S PRIORITIES Fulfilling the vision ‘The city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt’ (7:4). ‘The leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, the holy city. The rest of the people cast lots…’ (11:1).

NEHEMIAH – A LEADER’S PRIORITIES Celebrating achievement ‘On that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away’ (12:43).
