THE INTEL TRINITY: CH. 17 & 18 JENNELLE VALERA

CH. 17 – DEALING DOWN  Introduces 1103 model  1,024-bit memory chip  Many bugs/issues  Advertised after desperation  Andy Grove concerned about feedback  Memory chip surprisingly successful  Ended up teaming with Microsystems Int’l Limited (MIL) to keep up with deman  Takeaway  This memory chip established the path to mini computers, personal computers

CH. 18 – THE PHILOSOPHER’S CHIP  Takes place over a year after Intel and Busicom first made their deals regarding the 4000 series chips  Kojima of Busicom tells Noyce that renegotiations need to be made  4000 series was too overpriced  After the rights were sold to Intel, led to the downfall of Busicom  Intel now concerned about marketing new product  New problem – Texas Instruments + “CPU on a chip”  Computer Terminal Corp (CTC) and Intel’s contract  New contract with Seiko, commercials rights to 1202  Feuds between Grove and Graham, leads to termination  New marketing director Ed Gelbach, from TI  Takeaway  Sometimes firing the best people is best for the business

DISCUSSION QUESTION If you worked at Intel, would you take the risk of selling the 1103 memory chip, despite all of the bugs and issues it was having?
