Introduction  Corrosion may be defined as the chemical deterioration of a material.  Metals are the key materials that are subject to corrosion, but polymers and ceramics can also corrode.  Metallic corrosion involves the deterioration of metals or metal alloys, and is basically the reverse of the refining process.  Most metals occur as chemical compounds, and corrosion progressively returns them to this state.

Oxidation and reduction  Oxidation occurs when the metal loses electrons, and it occurs at the anode.  Oxidation = loss.  Reduction is the consumption of electrons and occurs at the cathode. It is the opposite to oxidation, therefore reduction = gain. OILRIG
