MUNICIPAL REVENUES & EXPENSES Government REVENUES: Operations that make money. Government EXPENSES: Operations that cost money. They make $ by charging all citizens different fees and taxes. They spend $ to offer services such as hospitals and police.

There are different taxes for fuel and other specialty items as well as for shopping or importing goods across the border. Always check the formulas and charts to see what these charges are.

There are 3 LEVELS of GOVERNMENT which are each responsible for different things. 1)FEDERAL (GOVERNMENT OF CANADA) 2)PROVINCIAL (GOVERNMENT OF MANITOBA) 3)MUNICIPAL (CITY OF WINNIPEG)

1)FEDERAL (GOVERNMENT OF CANADA) Expenses include: -RCMP -Health Care System (free doctor/hospital services) Revenues include: -GST (5%) when we shop -‘Income tax’ deductions from our pay cheques

2) PROVINCIAL (GOVERNMENT OF MANITOBA) Expenses include: -Education System -Provincial Parks -Provincial Highways Revenues include: (Similar to the federal Government of Canada.) -PST (7%) when we shop -‘Income tax’ deductions from our pay cheques

3) MUNICIPAL (CITY OF WINNIPEG) Expenses include: -School Divisions -City Police Dept. -Fire Dept. -Ambulance Services -Streets and Community Services -Parks and Recreation Revenues include: -Property taxes -‘User fees’ such as bus fares and registration fees

Note that some of these things may be looked after by a combination of the different levels of government. Government ‘transfers’ of money are used to share such expenses.
