What is a graphic?  A graphic can be a: Chart Drawing Painting Photograph Logo Navigation button Diagram

8 Graphic File Formats  A computer can save and interpret graphic images in a variety of formats. Some of the most common are: GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) TIFF (Tagged Information File Format) BMP (bitmap) PSD (Photoshop Document) PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

Graphics Quality  Two factors that determine graphics quality are resolution and color depth. Resolution is the number of pixels per inch. Computer Monitors use 72dpi. Color depth refers to the number of distinct colors an image can contain. It can range from 2-bit (black and white) to 24-bit (16.7 million colors).

Dithering  Creates the illusion that an image has more colors than it really has

Resizing  Resizing is changing the height and width of the image Correct Original Incorrect

Digital Photography  Steps to Taking Dynamic Photographs 1. Focus 2. Use Rule of Thirds 3. Check the background 4. Unifying Elements 5. Special Effects

Focus – Two Meanings 1. Is the picture clear.

2. Does the picture’s subject hold prominence? Is it the focus of the picture?

Rule of Thirds  Divide the photo into thirds both horizontally or vertically to achieve balance  Place points of interest at intersections or along the lines

Check the Background  Be sure to rid the photo of non-essential clutter so more attention is on the Focus of the photo

Cropping  Cropping is used to eliminate unwanted parts of a picture Before After

Unifying Elements  To help the eye wander around the photo use lines or geometric shapes to tie the photo together

Geometric Shaping

Special Effects  Camera angle or perspective can affect the emotional weight of photographs
