Young Ruler Rich Mark 10:17-31 – ‘Rich’ Matthew 19:16-22 – ‘Young’ Luke 18:18-30 – ‘Ruler’

Young Ruler Rich What is first in life “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” 1 Thes. 5:21

What shall I do ? “And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” Mark 10:17

Mark 10:18-19 “And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.” of “Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.”

Is there something else ? What more is there? “And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.” Mark 10:20 Matt. 19:20 “what lack I yet ?” Is there something else ?

of One more thing “Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.“ Mark 10:21 NKJV

of One more thing Jesus knew the heart Valued possessions too high Go sell – give to poor Take up cross – follow him Matt. 6:19-21 Lay up treasures in heaven

The young man’s Reaction “he had great po$$e$$ion$” “And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.” Mark 10:22 “his countenance fell” ASV “he went away sorrowful” Mt. “he had great po$$e$$ion$”

The Peril of Riches Mk.10:23 “And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!” 24 “And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!”

The Peril of Riches Mk. 10:25 “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.” 26 “And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?” 27 “And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.”

Trust in riches Snare = a trap

His Real Problem

Value of a Righteous Life Mark 10:28-31 Peter - we have left all Jesus answered: 100 fold in this time Eternal life “But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.” v. 31

Young Ruler Rich Most important choice is about God ! Will we put him first ? Rich young ruler was a good man but he loved his possessions more than God !
