GCSE English Key information for parents

The courses GCSE English Language – Developing reading understanding, writing skills and spoken language. GCSE English Literature – Developing reading analysis skills, understanding of a range of literary forms and appreciation of key works of English literature.

New GCSE Structure No coursework or controlled assessment 100% terminal exam at the end of Year 11 Increased challenge Greater focus on accuracy of writing

Start preparing now!

Homework Support your child when they do English homework by reading over their work and pointing out any spelling or punctuation mistakes.

Reading for Pleasure Encourage reading for pleasure. Students who regularly read develop a wider understanding and vocabulary and are statistically much more likely to do well in all academic subjects. All students should read for at least 15 minutes before going to sleep every night.

Model Reading Model reading by doing it yourself and sharing books or newspaper articles with your child.

Talk! Encourage discussion and debate. Challenge your child to explain their views clearly and in detail.
