Technology in Social Studies Instruction İrem Sak

What is ‘Social Studies’ Integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence –anthropology, archaeology, criminology, economics, education, linguistics, political science and international relations, sociology, geography, history, law, and psychology

The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.

Curriculum and Instructions Teachers and curriculum designers are encouraged first to establish their program frameworks using the social studies standards as a guide, and then to use the standards from history, geography, civics, economics, and others to guide the development of grade level strands and courses. Using all of these standards in concert with one another allows educators to give adequate attention to both integrated and single discipline configurations

Implementation of Technology Integration in the Social Studies Classroom Phase 1: Determining Relative Advantage Phase 2: Decide on Objectives and Assessment Phase 3: Design Integration Strategies Phase 4: Preparing Environment Phase 5: Evaluate and Revise

TOP 10 STRATEGIES FOR INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY IN SOCIAL STUDIES INSTRUCTION

Adventure learning This provides students with opportunities to collaborate with other students, teachers, and experts Using a research-based curriculum, they study authentic real-time adventures taking place around the world

Virtual field trips Will help students learn about other cultures. The wealth of information available on the web allows students to study other lands and ways of life

Geocaching treasure hunts These activities allow students to spend more time studying geographical information and techniques in a fun and engaging way

´ Live through history Simulated immersion experiences allow students to play the role of decision maker in historical situations to see the relevance of the event and to develop better problem-solving skills

Webquests Internet research can help students learn about current events that have historical roots in past events and debates

Geospatial technologies Google Earth, the most widely-known geospatial technology, allows for real- world analysis as students study content such as history, economics, and geography

Stock Market Simulations Students can learn economic principles with simulations games. They will better understand the complexities of the stock market by playing the role of stockbroker, investing ‘their’ money, and seeing the return overtime

Electronic storytelling Students can watch history come alive and learn local and other history with images and audio that tell the stories of lives, events, or eras when preparing oral histories.

Voice Thread Use software such as this to allows students to collaborate in real-time with numerous forms of content (photos, videos, pdfs, etc) and comment on each other’s work in an online learning environment

Digital Cameras Allows students to capture images from their vantage point, participate in the construction of knowledge, and learn how diverse perspectives can be shaped.
