Algebra & Functions Unit Portfolio Presentation Meybell Quijano

Unit Summary Students will learn to use variables to write equations, inequalities and present their information by plotting points in graph form. They will study linear and non-linear functions to understand the basis of slope, x and y intercepts, vertex, and positive/negative equations.

Curriculum-Framing Questions Essential Question: Do graphs serve a purpose? Unit Questions What can a line graph show you? Content Questions What does the slope of a graph tell you? What is the difference between a variable and a constant?

Target Content Standards 1.0 Students express quantitative relationships by using algebraic terminology, expressions, equations, inequalities, and graphs: 1.1 Use variables and appropriate operations to write an expression, an equation, an inequality, or a system of equations or inequalities that represents a verbal description (e.g., three less than a number, half as large as area A). 1.5 Represent quantitative relationships graphically and interpret the meaning of a specific part of a graph in the situation represented by the graph. 3.0 Students graph and interpret linear and some nonlinear functions: 3.1 Graph functions of the form y = nx2 and y = nx3 and use in solving problems. 3.3 Graph linear functions, noting that the vertical change (change in y- value) per unit of horizontal change (change in x- value) is always the same and know that the ratio ("rise over run") is called the slope of a graph. 3.4 Plot the values of quantities whose ratios are always the same (e.g., cost to the number of an item, feet to inches, circumference to diameter of a circle). Fit a line to the plot and understand that the slope of the line equals the quantities.

Learning Objectives Exercising sound reasoning in understanding Understanding the interconnections among systems Framing, analyzing and synthesizing information in order to solve problems and answer questions Learn related graphing terminology; ordered pair, plot points, origin, x-axis, y-axis, vertex, etc.

How will I use Project-Based Learning Project Based Learning?” P.B.L. is a study process in which students will create classroom projects, that follow curriculum guidelines, which will help them learn their math concepts in a fun and different way. We will be participating in modules such as: Living Room Dimensional Planning, Geometry Jeopardy, Geometric Straw-Star and much more. These projects will help your students engage themselves in math and learn the subject matter through research and technology.

Gauging Student Needs Assessment Students will be asked to plot points using various worksheets Connect the Dot Ordered Pair Drawing Drawing comparison Students will partner together and compare their drawings to see the “real” picture What went wrong questionnaire Complete the questions to gain a better understanding of what they did incorrectly Goal Students will gain a better understanding of plotting points on the graph paper. They will be able to see how one wrong point can ruin the entire picture.

Thank you!
