CA-OES CAL(IT)2 Feb. 20, 2002 Internet GIServices From Centralized Systems to Distributed Services Ming-Hsiang Tsou Email: mtsou@mail.sdsu.edu phone: 619-5940205 Fax: 619-5944938 Department of Geography, San Diego State University

Why Internet GIServices? Flexible Information Access / Exchange (End-Users only need a Web browser) Information Sharing and Integration (Access multiple Internet Map Servers at the same time– Local governments, USGS, EPA, Census, etc.) Real-time Information Update and Distribution Gather data from client sides (polices, firefighters), Distribute updated data from server sides (control centers)

Internet Map Server Three-Tie Architecture http://map.sdsu.edu ArcIMS Client (Web browser) + Java applets Internet Map Server ArcIMS Web Server map.sdsu.edu Internet Client (Web browser) + IMS Viewer Client (Web browser) Regional Database (GIS)

Three Types of Internet GIServices Data Warehouse (Catalog & Metadata) Interactive Internet Mapping Facilities (Internet Map Servers) Real-time Analytical Tools for GIS modeling and analysis applications. (wide fire spreading model, flooding area prediction,)

Key Technologies Internet Map Server (ESRI’s ArcIMS, AutoDesk’s MapGuide, INTEGRAPH’s GeoMedia Web Map, SmallWorld’s Internet Application Servers, etc.) Java Programming (cross-platform: Java applets and Java Servlets) XML (Extensible Markup Language) for metadata and communication with Internet Map Servers (ArcIMS – ArcXML).

Internet Mapping Software Comparisons GeoMedia Web Map http://www.intergraph.com/gis/customers/default.asp Internet Mapping Software Comparisons http://map.sdsu.edu/software-demo.htm

Problems for Internet GIS packages Heterogeneous Geospatial Data Formats ArcIMS: Shapefiles and Images MapGuide: Spatial Data Files (SDFs) GeoMedia Web Map: ActiveCGM Security and Upgradeability Access control, password protection, Intranet solution Upgrade from 100 clients to 1000 clients. Customizable Interfaces and functions require advanced programming efforts. lack of on-line GIS operations and modeling functions.

NASA ARC project: Web-based GIS and Analytical Tools Http://map.sdsu.edu/arc Required Web Browser: Java applets capability (IE 5.0 or Netscape 4.0 later) Suggested Screen Resolution 1024x768

Project Demonstration: http://map.sdsu.edu/arc

GPS / Remote Sensing Images Data Integration GPS data collected by MTRP Park Rangers with their Trimble GPS units and Pathfinder Office software. Research teams converted the GPS data sets to Shapefiles and integrate them with our ArcIMS server.

MTRP BMX (motor-crossing bicycling) GPS Data in ArcIMS

Image Overlay Function (Change Detection)

Image Processing Image Filtering Image Viewing

Current Internet GIS Capabilities What can we do now? On-line display (spatial features) On-line query (attributes) Very limited GIS functions. (Identifying, selections, buffering? ). On-line editing new graphs/data and send back to servers. What can we not do now? Full GIS operations (overlay, network analysis, 3D…) Upload a GIS Model or procedures to server side. Integration of different vendors’ packages (ArcIMS, MapGuide, GeoMedia Web Map).

Future Development Smart Mapping Software Mobile devices Intelligent Software Agents, (searching requested GIS data automatically) Mobile devices GPS / Cellular Phone/ PDA Integration Real-time GIS functions and Modeling Hydrology modeling (flood control: ALERT systems), Wide fire modeling, Earth Quake simulations, etc.
