10 TYPES OF ENERGY Translational, Rotational, Electromagnetic, Electrical, Chemical, Thermal, Sound, Elastic, Gravitational and Nuclear

Review : What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work. Work is done when a force moves an object through a distance

Translational Energy o Energy due to motion in a line The car has translational energy.

Examples of translational Energy

Rotational energy Energy due to an object rotating around its center of gravity.

Electromagnetic Energy ( Also known as Light energy) Energy that travels through space as WAVES o Includes energy from gamma rays, xrays, ultraviolet rays, visible light, infrared rays, microwave and radio wave

Electrical Energy o Energy due to the position of electrical charges. o Easily transported through power lines and converted into other forms of energy

Chemical Energy o Energy that is stored in chemical bonds (Food/fuel) The chemical bonds in a matchstick store energy that is transformed into thermal energy when the match is struck.

Examples of Chemical Energy

Thermal Energy Energy due to the motion of the particles in matter (Greater motion=Greater energy) o Also known as: Heat energy A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid movement. A cooler object's molecules and atoms will show less movement.

Sound energy Energy caused by vibration of particles of matter

Nuclear energy Energy stored in nucleus of atoms.

Elastic Potential energy Energy that is stored in an object that is stretched, compressed or coiled

Elastic potential energy examples

Gravitational potential energy Potential energy that depends on an objects height.

Gravitational potential energy

QUIZ TIME! What type of energy cooks food in a microwave oven? ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY What type of energy is the spinning plate inside of a microwave oven? ROTATIONAL ENERGY
