Warm Blooded Vertebrates Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Characteristics:   - Mammary glands   - fur or hair   - specialized teeth   - large brains   - internal fertilization with mothers caring for the young.   - endothermic

1. Monotremes -only mammals that lay eggs. ex) echidnas and duck billed platypus.

2. Marsupials - give birth to live young, but they develop in the mom's pouch. ex) opossum, kangaroo, koala

Placental Mammals All the rest of the mammals are placental mammals. The placenta supplies food and blood from the mom to the growing embryo.

3. Toothless Mammals - have long sticky tongues to catch insects. ex) anteater, armadillos.

4. Insect Eaters ex) moles, shrews, and hedgehogs. - small with long pointed noses to dig into soil for insects. ex) moles, shrews, and hedgehogs.

5. Rodents - have sharp front teeth called incisors that never stop growing. ex) squirrels, mice, rats, porcupines, beavers.

7. Flying Mammals only ones that fly, are nocturnal and locate prey by echolocation. Ex) bats
