Analysis: Birth to Adulthood December 2011 State of Literacy in Monterey County

English/LA - Grades 2 through 11 2

Math - Grades 2 through 7 3

Algebra I - Grade 7 through 11 4

Algebra II – Grades 9 through 11 5

Science – Grade 5, 8, 10 At grade five, 51% are not proficient in Science, at grade eight, 41% are not proficient and at grade ten, 57% are not proficient. Note that in 10 th grade these students are taking Life Science, a class offered for students who are not able to enroll in other more advanced science classes needed for college. 6

Biology – Grade 9 though 11 Thirty-five percent of high school students attempt biology, a required lab science class for college attendance. Fifty-seven percent do not achieve proficiency. 7

Chemistry – Grades 9 through 11 Only 12 % of students in Monterey County attempt Chemistry. Sixty-six percent do not achieve proficiency. 8
