Wallingford Software InfoWorks 2D – An introduction Andrew Walker Sales Manager, Urban Drainage Software

InfoWorks 2D 2D Hydraulics

2D Engine Requirements l Suitable for surface flood flows l Fits around complex urban geometry l Efficient run-times l Simple to couple with existing 1D models

InfoWorks 2D - Key Features l Fully integrated within the existing model network l Multiple 2D Mesh Zones l Connected to existing nodes / manholes l Mesh building & editing tools l Audit trail & Version control l 1D & 2D engines run as single simulation l Fully integrated results presentation (including animated flood mapping and flow direction / speed)

2D Engine Development l Initial development during IMPACT research project using structured grids l Further development by Jonatan Mulet- Marti to use an unstructured mesh l Now re-written for incorporation in InfoWorks l Available with InfoWorks v8.5

2D Engine Solution l Finite volume l Conservation of mass & momentum l Unstructured mesh l Gudunov scheme – Riemann solver l Semi-implicit, dual time-stepping Runge-Kutta (predictor-corrector) l Shock capturing

Triangular Unstructured Mesh

Mesh Generation l Import 2D Zone via GIS or create in InfoWorks l Use DEM or DTM plus CAD/GIS/External files l Mesh Zone boundaries defined by polygons l Internal features including: l Voids – buildings, walls, etc l Obstructions – increased roughness l Roads l Banks l Inbuilt “thinning” to simplify mesh
