Long Lake Hounds Hunt Cup An Old Fashioned Hunt Pacer Derived From Steeplechase Sunday October 2, 2011 Medina Hunt Country

What is a Schooling Days Old Fashioned Hunt Pace (“OFHP”)?  The old fashioned hunt pace is derived from point to point or steeplechase which is a form of horse racing and derives its name from early races in which orientation of the course was by reference to a church steeple, jumping fences and ditches and generally traversing the many intervening obstacles in the countryside. The sport was orginally derived from Fox Hunting. Along with Roads and Tracks, it is part of the long course format in Eventing.horse racingchurchsteeple  Many of the world’s most successful Top Level Event Horses and Riders are former fox hunters and steeplechasers and continually school over brush fences for the enhancement of safety and optimal pacing.  Many hunts throughout the country hold annual OFHP derived from point-to- point or steeplechase races which are major sporting events. These races are usually held over a course of around 2 miles with the horses jumping anywhere from 8 to 16 birch or brush fences of around 3 ft in height. Many eventer’s enter OFHP derived from point to point races

Steeplechase and Eventing  Steeplechase is Phase B on Endurance day in a long format Event. In a Preliminary Three-Day the Steeplechase phase is between 1,710 and 2,240 meters long and is ridden at a gallop ( meters per minute) over five to seven brush jumps. At the end of the steeplechase, the horse and rider go directly into Phase C.  It is a valuable way to train and school horses and riders over “ forgiving” cross country obstacles  Provides horses and riders the opportunity to school over fences at pace and focus on optimal time and pacing the course.  Many riders jump clear “over the cross country fences” but incur time penalties. Point to Point’s reinforce and help school “optimal pacing”  It allows horse and rider to compete in a “Cross Country” type Event and prepares horse and rider for the “Long Form” Three Day Event.

In a recent episode of the Eventing Radio Show, cross-country riding specialist Lucinda Green talks passionately about why she believes that bringing the steeplechase phase back into the sport of three-day eventing would make the sport safer.Eventing Radio ShowLucinda Green Lucinda Green calls for return of steeplechase to eventing

Lucinda Green and The Steeplechase “The Steeplechase helps every rider get into the groove mentally and physically. The rider should learn how to jump fences that are forgiving “at Speed” “I would like to see a 2 mile Steeplechase incorporated and the main reason I would like to see it is for safety” Lucinda Green
