WordSentenceCorrect Dictionary Definition Nary Now that slavery is over, I don`t want to be in nary` nother slavery, and if ever nary nother come, I wouldn`t stay here. Never a; not one. Disfiguring One day while my mammy was washing her back my sister noticed ugly disfiguring scars on it. To mar the appearance or beauty of; deformed. Conscious They who were held as slaves looked upon themselves an the servitude in which they found themselves in the eyes and the mind of a human being, conscious about things that went around them Aware of what one is doing at the time or place. Vivid They knew, and when given the opportunity, they would talk of slavery in vivid, fresh, and alive language. Covering the mind striking realism, freshness, or trueness to life. ferryboat At the time Ol` Master had a ferryboat and three farms. A boat used to transport passengers across rivers.

 I think the author was trying to explain why slaves were treated badly, and what they went through to survive during slavery times.

 It was a little confusing hearing words I have never heard before like; nary, vivid, or conscious.

 To the slaves it was clear that slavery existed for two reasons: free labor, an the money that was received from the fruits of that free labor and from selling slaves.

SubjectAuthor’s FeelingsText Evidence SlaveryHe felt bad for what has happened The American Anti- Society took away stories from black that lived from the South, but Lester wanted to speak for the slaves and hear their story.

ParagraphsMain Idea Beginning-Page # 28Mainly who slaves were and what they did. Middle-Page #28The slaves saying they were more human than the people who said they were not. End-Page #29What slaves were called and what they did to get out of trouble.

DetailsPage #Comments Slave being whipped unnecessary. 35 I thought that it was unnecessary to whip slaves when they mess up or do little things. Being called bad names like “negroes” 29 I thought he put that sort of language in the book is because to tell us that slaves were rarely called by their real names the whites would give them a name “negroes.” People selling African Americans 40 The only reason whites sold slaves is to earn money off of the slaves by selling them to the highest bidder

What the Book SaysConclusions Drawn Situation: Whites calling blacks “ negroes” Character Actions: They would just answer like its their name. Would not get offended Situation: Blacks wanted to fight back against the whites Character Actions: Go out and try to find a white slave owner to eliminate

FactsPage #Comments Slaves being sold like an auction. 46 Thy should let people choose what they want to do. Slaves fighting back 119 You don`t have to use violence to get back at the people that has hurt you. Slaves running awayI think they should be free The three ways the whites would capture the blacks 20 I thought the author included this is to tell you how blacks were captured and used as slaves. Slaves lives in harsh conditions on the boats on the way to North America. 22 That`s sad that slaves lived in those kind if conditions they could at least gave the a nice place in stead of being cramped under the ship.

OpinionsPage #Comments

 I disliked and liked the book “To Be A Slave”. I disliked the book because it talked about how slaves were treated and what they were called. But what I did like about the book is that at the end the slaves were set free.
