ENERGY & MACHINES

How Do Machines Use Energy? A machine uses energy to make work easier Machines make work easier by changing the size or direction of the force Example: Cracking a nut with a nutcracker is easier than cracking it with your hands

How Are Machines Energy Converters? Certain machines are designated specifically to convert one form of energy into another Ex: Car’s engine: Chemical Energy turns into thermal & kinetic energy to make the car move Ex: Windmill: Wind (Kinetic Energy) turns into electric energy

Why Are Energy Conversions Important? Helps to heat our homes Make our appliances work We need to make more energy efficient machines = less energy input to get more energy output Example: Hybrid cars use less gasoline to travel further distances (better gas mileage)
