Characteristics of Life

What are the 6 characteristics of life?  All living things are organized, respond to stimuli, grow and develop, reproduce, maintain certain internal conditions and use energy

How are living things organized?  All life is made of cells. Cells are organized.

How do living things respond?  All living things respond to a stimulus.  Ex: your immune system respond to invasion of bacteria or virus.

What is growth and development?  Growth- when number of cells increases or size of cell increases.  Development- changes that occur in an organism. Ex: brain development, metamorphosis.

How do organisms reproduce?  All cells come from preexisting cells. All life creates offspring similar to themselves.

What is homeostasis ?  Homeo: same, stasis: conditions  Keeping internal conditions within appropriate limits.  Ex: maintain body temperature by sweating, shivering. When temperature is not stable - hypothermia

What energy do organisms use?  All cells get energy from the food we eat. All energy comes from the sun.

Summary:  IN YOUR OWN WORDS: Write 5 complete sentences about what you learned. Make sure to use science vocabulary.
