Quick Quiz What is the chemical formula for: sodium chloride? Draw it! What is the chemical formula for: carbon tetrachloride? Draw it! Label each as ionic or covalent. What are the seven diatomic elements?

Balancing Reactions Date:

Definition: A chemical equation is the symbolic representation of a chemical reaction in terms of chemical formulas. –Equation = what we will be writing –Reaction = what we see happen –Formula = putting the elements together to make a compound

Magnesium reacts with oxygen to form magnesium oxide. Watch reaction and describe what you see. Write the formulas for substances involved. Magnesium reacts with oxygen to form magnesium oxide.

Reactants  Products Reactants react together to produce the products. We read left to right, equations are written left to right.

Symbols to know + used to separate reactants and products  used to separate reactants from products, means “yields” or “reacts to form”

Methane reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water

Sodium reacts with iodine to form sodium iodide

Calcium reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide & hydrogen.

Iron reacts with oxygen to produce iron (III) oxide.

Hexane burns in oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water.

Aluminum chloride reacts with silver nitrate to produce aluminum nitrate and silver chloride.

Hydrochloric acid reacts with calcium carbonate to produce carbon dioxide, water & calcium chloride.

Tungsten (II) oxide reacts with hydrogen to produce tungsten metal and water.

Chlorine reacts with sodium iodide to produce sodium chloride and iodine
