“Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin 1894

PREDICT Based on the title of the story, what do you predict will happen in this “story of an hour”?

First Line of the Story “Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death.” Now, make another prediction based on the title and the first line.

Let’s read the story to find out. Turn to page 628.

Journal Responses Pick out at least five phrases which you think are especially important to the story. Briefly describe why you chose each.

Some Quotes “She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms.” “She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life.” “She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead.” “’Free! Body and soul free!’ she kept whispering.” “When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease--of joy that kills.”

Other Questions Do you admire Mrs. Mallard for daring to take joy in this revelation of freedom, or do you condemn her for reacting with such callousness to her husband’s death? How might Josephine and Richards have reacted if they had learned about Mrs. Mallard’s true feelings regarding her husband’s death?
