A Lifestyle of Service January 16

Think About It … What is the best service you’ve received in a restaurant? What made it so good? God calls believers today to have a serving attitude.  Today we look at Jesus teaching about being a servant

Listen for Jesus’ comments on power and authority. Mark 10:42-45 (NIV) Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. [43] Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, [44] and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. [45] For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Redefine Greatness What did Jesus warn all His disciples about? In what ways do we vie for power and authority? What value did Jesus place on serving? How does Jesus want us to handle power and authority?

Redefine Greatness Lord Acton stated … Agree or Disagree? "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men." AgreeDisagree

Redefine Greatness How did Jesus advise the disciples regarding greatness? What did Jesus mean when He said He “did not come to be served, but to serve”? How should you respond to Jesus’ giving His life as a ransom for you?

Redefine Greatness Consider the poem by Christina G. Rossetti “What can I give him, Poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; If I were a wise man, I would do my part; Yet what I can I give him – Give my heart.”

Listen for how hard work is rewarded. Matthew 25:19-21 (NIV) "After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. [20] The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.' [21] "His master replied,

Listen for how hard work is rewarded. 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' … [29] For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.

Seize Your Opportunities How did the master respond to the report of the first servant who doubled his 5 talents? What conclusion did the master make about the end results of all three servants in vs 29? Besides money or material possessions, what are some resources God has placed in our care?

Seize Your Opportunities What thoughts or attitudes cause us to be lazy in carrying out our Christian responsibilities? What are the risks of investing our gifts for God’s service? What are the rewards of investing our gifts for God’s service?

Listen for surprise at Jesus’ judgment. Matthew 25:34-40 (NIV) "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. [35] For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, [36] I needed clothes and you

Listen for surprise at Jesus’ judgment. clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me,, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' [37] "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?

Listen for surprise at Jesus’ judgment. [38] When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? [39] When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' [40] "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

Serve the Least of These What will Jesus say to those on His right? Why will the group on Jesus’ right be blessed? How will the “sheep” respond to Jesus’ words on that day? How do people usually determine whether they will be nice to somebody?

Serve the Least of These How would your behavior change if you treated each person in your life as if he or she were Jesus? What should motivate us to serve others – especially those not able to pay or who may not appreciate help? How does serving others translate into serving Jesus (as implied in the passage)?

Application People of the world define greatness in terms of how many people honor and serve them – Jesus taught that greatness is based on service to others – Seek ways to be great by serving people around you

Application Remember that all we have ultimately belongs to God – He entrusts with us specific resources – time, talents, treasures – He gives each believer a Spiritual Gift – Use those resources this week to further the Kingdom of God

Application What act of kindness or mercy toward the needy can you do this week? – Ask God to help you be aware of needs around you where you can be God’s instrument – Look for people who are hungry, thirsty, in need of friends, in need of clothing, in need of healing or release from some kind of prison
