NALA’s Literacy Definition Literacy involves listening & speaking, reading, writing, numeracy and using everyday technology to communicate and handle information. It includes more than the technical skills of communication: it also has personal, social and economic dimensions. Literacy increases the opportunity for individuals and communities to reflect on their situation, explore new possibilities and initiate change.

What are Causes of Literacy Difficulties Physical Educational Social & Economic Family

Causes Physical/Psychological Poor hearing, poor vision, speech difficulties, childhood illness, specific learning difficulties

Causes Family Large family, difficulties in family life, lack of attention for child, books not present Educational Large classes, child with learning difficulty not catered to, poor teaching methods, lack of support, discipline, poor attendance, streaming, early school leavers

Causes Social and Economic Poverty, poor housing, child withdrawn from school, lack of money for materials, hidden expense of free education, truancy.
