Biodiesel By: Noria and Amber

PROS *Biodiesel is made using oil from plants, such as rapessed (canola), soy beans, and sunflowers. The oil is extracted from the plants and the mixed with an acid ( a strong, sour liquid) * Biodiesel is good for the environment.

CON'S *Biofuels are more expensive to produce than fossil fuels and this is why they are not used more widely. *In addition, energy companies lack effcient methods for producing biofuels.

Source of energy/fuel *Vegetable oils, biomass can include trees; leftovers crops, soybean and corn; animal wastes; or the waste producs of certain industies such as wood chips from the logging industy, pulp from the paper and food waste fro the food processing industy.

How it works... Plants use energy from the sun to convert water and carbon dixoide into sugars that they use as food. This process is called photosynthesis. Some plants, such as corn, stores the sugars in chains called straches. To make biofuels, those starches are converted into sugars, which are the fermented to make alcohol(ethanol). The yeast eats the sugar and the produces ethanol an carbon dixoide ( The non toxic gas used to make sodas "bubbly")

3 Extra Facts... *Since Liquid biofuels are made using agriculture products, there is some concern that obtaining the biomass needed for their production could overuse the land or lead to deforestation(destroyed forest land). * During the late 1800's ethanol was used to fuel lamps. * Henry Ford came out with his model T cars in the 1908, it was designed to run on ethanol.
