Presentation transcript:

After considerable pushing and shoving, this configuration show some promise. I have taken some liberties with the geometry and turned mounts inside-out from earlier versions. Long Primary struts Fold-Flat mounts on both sides FIDO face mounts Tertiary edge mounts Quad “Butterfly” Filter Pack

Long Primary struts Hard Points Lined up along common axes All mounts have 6 point mounts to the Optical element, 3 point mounts to the structural element Face and Edge mounted Optical elements

Ignore the Hexapod A Newer better actuator is on the way The Yellow elements are Envelopes that define Load paths and vertexes When their positions settle down, real hardware will be inserted Yellow Envelopes also define Fiducials and reference planes, the CAD equivalent of GSE ( Ignore them )

CFRP Triangular Beams Quad “Butterfly” Filter/Shutter Package The 3 beams pick up all Optical mounts Tertiary FoldFlat FIDO and Quad Filter assembly Cosmic Ray Shield Cryostat

CFRP Shear panels and Bulkhead “Candybox” Note Filter housing Candybox Interface occurs At or near Primary hard points

CFRP Triangular Beam Assembly

CFRP webbed pan integrated onto the Beam assembly Top face is not shown

Spacecraft structure picks up OTA At three points on a hard ring This surface forms the platform for the Secondary Assembly This surface forms the platform for the Baffle and Solar array

This approach works for most of our earlier metering concepts Solves some of the 3x vs 4x symmetry problems 3-Vane,Trapezoid section

This approach works for most of our earlier metering concepts Solves some of the 3x vs 4x symmetry problems 6-strut, tubular section, Full-length

4-Vane,Trapezoid section This approach works for most of our earlier metering concepts Solves some of the 3x vs 4x symmetry problems

Shown here is a 4-Vane (trapezoidal cross-section) secondary metering structure On a spacer ring This configuration allows us to tune the resonant frequency of the strut by adjusting the spacer height

The build-up sequence looks like this from the bottom

“Candybox” Beam Assembly Primary Bench Beam assembly

Primary Bench integrated 1 of 3 points that index the Primary Bench to the Candybox

Candybox Indexed to Primary Bench beams

Candybox Primary Bench

25dm Baffle Assembly Envelope for Baffle structure, MLI And Solar Array Note that the hard Ring is Lower than earlier versions 6 strut assembly 3 point mount at OTA, 6 point mount and S/C pan THE FITUP looks like this….

25dm Baffle Support structure and MLI not shown Solar Array Spacecraft structure VOILA ! No obvious interferences. Plenty of room for FIDO electronics close to the detector. Tuneable secondary structure Room for FIDO radiator. Thermal and kinematic isolation between Baffles, Spacecraft, and OTA seems doable Really lousy interface between the ‘Candy box’ and the Primary bench

So……… Here it is in rough form. My immediate question is: Can these radical mounts be made to work ? Have I violated good-practice conventions, or overlooked something? If this works for you, the next thing to do is to integrate it with the current Baffle, and the Current Secondary structure. Details for the mount geometry Are previewed on the following pages.
