What would you say if I told you the truth?

You really CAN learn anything you want to!

You really CAN learn anything you want to You really CAN learn anything you want to! You really CAN BECOME whatever you want to be!

Warm Up: String Problem Situation: You have two flammable strings with really cool properties. When lit on fire, each string will burn for exactly 1 hour. The rate of burning is NOT constant – different parts of each string burn at different rates AND each string will burn at an independent rate from the other.

Warm Up: String Problem Task: You need to use these strings to measure EXACTLY 45 minutes. How do you do it?

What did you THINK? What did you FEEL? What did you HEAR? What did you SEE?

I can compare and contrast the traits of TWO different mindsets. Learning Targets I can compare and contrast the traits of TWO different mindsets. I can explain why having a growth mindset matters. Have 2 students read each learning target

When you play a musical instrument or sing or dance or play a sport, how do you get better at it?

Think of something you do very well – but not school work – and explain how you get better at it. Be as detailed as you possibly can be.

What happens in our brains when we learn?

1. First, you’ve got to get the learning in… There is a physical reason why culture and environment plays such a powerful role in learning – and it’s found deep inside our brains.

2. Once the learning gets in… What Happens In Our Brains When We Learn?

How Do Our Brains Work? Neurons are the cells that make up your brain – the branches coming off the cell are called dendrites.

Dendrites and axons create connections with other neurons. Dendrites help new information to COME IN to our neurons and axons take information AWAY from the cell body of a neuron, therefore making connections.

When we learn something new, two amazing things happen … 1. We actually grow MORE AND BIGGER dendrites on our neurons. 2. We use these new dendrites to create NEW CONNECTIONS with other neurons.

… AND the harder you WORK to learn something new, the more… Connections you will make Dendrites you will grow

3. Finally, we need to make that learning stick 3. Finally, we need to make that learning stick! Here’s what happens when we practice…

A way of thinking that determines our behavior and attitude MINDSET A way of thinking that determines our behavior and attitude Call on 5 people to share what they think of when they think of the term “mindset” Have someone read out the defi Today is all about thinking about mindsets and how they impact how we learn and our overall “success”

Two Types of Mindsets Fixed Mindset Growth Mindset

Two Types of Mindsets Fixed Mindset Growth Mindset Intelligence is innate and cannot change You can learn new things, but you cannot make yourself smarter Intelligence is malleable and can change with hard work You can make yourself smarter through hard work

Two Types of Mindsets Fixed Mindset Growth Mindset I just am not smart enough to learn _____ I’ll never go to college! I just don’t get it. I give up! If I can just keep working at this, I will learn it! I can get to college – even if it’s hard. I don’t get it yet, but I will if I keep trying. I’m not giving up!!

Connections to What We Do at IAT CREW TEACHER LEARNING CLASSROOM Write and pass at table groups. Share out exceptional and thought provoking connections. Closing….. CREST INSTRUCTION

Why are Mindsets so powerful for learning? Because if our students believe they are not genetically endowed with “intelligence,” why should they even try to learn? And, if they believe they are endowed with “intelligence,” why would they risk looking dumb by trying to do really hard academic tasks?

FINAL THOUGHTS: EXIT TICKET How do you think this will be most useful for you? What do you want your teachers to know about mindsets?

THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE TODAY! …and now it’s time to go GET SMART!!!
