Substance Misuse 2009/10  346 young people received substance misuse treatment in Sunderland during the 2009/10 period.  60% of referrals from Youth Offending Service, 25% from Children and Family Services (including Education), 9% from Health or Mental Health, and 2% from Looked After Children.  67% of cased led to planned closures, where YDAP treatment was completed with the young person.

Substances  Alcohol is the primary substance of use, accounting for 61% of all young people in treatment during 2009/10. Indications suggest that the frequency of which young people drink alcohol is decreasing, but there is still a need to continue the focus on alcohol and young people.  Cannabis is the second largest primary substance, accounting for 36% of young people in treatment.  There is concern that cannabis skunk use is becoming an increasing issue. With the sharing of drug taking equipment, there is concern of the risks of hepatitis B.  Class A drug use is low. Heroin Use remains at very low levels. Cocaine use exists but is not at problematic levels.
