Presentation transcript:

"The Church is the only society on earth that exists for the benefit of those who are not its members." (William Temple, Archbishop of Canterbury ) Why doesn’t God take us straight to heaven when we accept his grace and give our lives to Jesus? It is not the Church of God that has a mission in the world, but the God of mission who has a church in the world. ( Tim Dearborn, Beyond Duty) The church doesn’t exist to satisfy the consumer demands of believers; the church exists to equip and mobilize men and women for God’s mission in the world. ( Brian McLaren, A New Kind of Christian)

The church doesn’t exist for itself; it exists to serve the world. It is not ultimately about the church; it’s about all the people God wants to bless through the church. When the church loses sight of this, it loses its heart. Rob Bell, Velvet Elvis

Ephesians chapter 2 (NLT) Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. 2 You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil - the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. 3 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else. 4 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) 6 For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.

7 So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus. 8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Rescue v1-3 Relationship v4-7 Role v8-10

For we are God’s masterpiece [handiwork, workmanship, poetry]. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things [works] he planned for us long ago. (NLT) God planned for us to do good things and to live as he has always wanted us to live. That’s why he sent Christ to make us what we are. (CEV) God creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing. (Message Version) “Good works are indispensable to salvation - not as its ground or means … but as its consequence and evidence.”

service = ministry How much of our time, how often in our work, do we consciously offer ourselves to God to be available in his service? Do we think of our work/study/life as being an expression of our service to God, fulfilling God’s mandate to have dominion over/to govern/manage the earth? Do we have the continuing sense that we are being useful in God’s service? Maturity is for God’s ministry and mission
